Biography of Mark Lamos

Mark Lamos, an American theater and opera director, producer, and actor, was born on March 10, 1946, in Melrose Park, Illinois. From a young age, he pursued ballet and learned to play the violin. He received a music scholarship and became a student at Northwestern University. Lamos began his theater career as an actor at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis and later appeared on Broadway.

In 1980, Lamos joined The Hartford Stage Company in Hartford, Connecticut, as the artistic director. Under his leadership, the theater received the prestigious Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater in 1989. That same year, Lamos was also awarded the Connecticut Medal for the Arts. Additionally, his production of the play "Our Country's Good" received two Tony Award nominations for Best Play and Best Direction in 1991.

Currently, Lamos holds the position of artistic director at the Westport Country Playhouse. Throughout his career, Lamos has directed and produced numerous Broadway productions. Some notable works include "Einstein and the Polar Bear," "Is There Life After High School?," "Stand-Up Tragedy," and "Our Country's Good." He has also worked as a director in New York City, helming productions such as "The Deep Blue Sea," "The Gershwins' Fascinating Rhythm," "The Rivals," and "Seascape."

Beyond Broadway, Lamos has directed plays for various theater companies, including Primary Stages, where his production of "Indian Blood" received a nomination for the Callaway Award in 2006. He has also directed Shakespearean plays like "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., and opera adaptations such as Giuseppe Verdi's "I Lombardi" at the Metropolitan Opera.

Lamos has worked as a guest director in regional theaters, including the Stratford Festival in Canada, Yale Repertory Theatre, and the Kennedy Center. In 2004, he directed "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" at the Kennedy Center. In February 2009, Lamos assumed the position of artistic director at the Westport Country Playhouse.

In addition to his theater career, Lamos has lectured at Yale University, where he became an honorary staff member in 2007. He has also taught at the University of Michigan and has been affiliated with the University of Miami. Lamos is openly gay and has been in a long-term relationship with his partner, Jerry Jones, since 1979.
