Mark Vincent Parkinson is an American lawyer, businessman, and a prominent member of the Democratic Party. He is currently serving as the 45th Governor of the state of Kansas. Born on June 24, 1957, in Wichita, Kansas, Parkinson has had an illustrious career in both law and politics.
Early Life and Education
After completing high school, Parkinson graduated with honors from Wichita State University in 1980. He went on to become the first graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law in 1984. Following his education, Parkinson established his own law firm in 1986 and also served as the President of the Johnson County Bar Association.
Political Career
In 1990, Parkinson made his foray into politics and was elected as a representative for the Republican Party in the Kansas House of Representatives. Within two years, he ascended to the State Senate. In May 2006, Parkinson switched his party affiliation and joined the Democratic Party. He became the chief aide to Governor Kathleen Sebelius during her re-election campaign, replacing the retiring Republican Lieutenant Governor John E. Moore.
Governorship
On April 28, 2009, Kathleen Sebelius resigned from her position as governor after being appointed as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services by President Barack Obama. Parkinson was sworn in as the new Governor of Kansas on the same day. However, he later announced that he would not seek re-election in 2010.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Mark Parkinson has been married to Stacey Parkinson for over 25 years, and they have three children together: Alex, Sam, and Keith. The couple actively participates in charitable organizations and co-chairs the successful 'Sunflower House Capital' campaign, which raised around $4.2 million to support agencies that assist disadvantaged children. They have also helped raise $6.7 million for the 'SAFEHOME' agency. In recognition of their philanthropic efforts, the Parkinsons were named "Citizens of the Year" by the United Community Services of Johnson County in 2006.
The Parkinsons are members of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, where they actively contribute to the community.
