Biography of Marten Liiv

Marten Liiv is an Estonian speed skater who specializes in sprint disciplines. He was born on February 26, 1996, in Estonia. Liiv has been involved in speed skating since 2007, training at the Tervis club in Põltsamaa under the guidance of coach Väino Treiman. In the mid-2010s, he also trained in Germany at the Inzell academy with coach Wim den Elsen, as well as in Austria.

Early Career

Liiv began participating in Estonian youth championships in 2010 and achieved multiple championship titles and medals. In 2012, he made his debut in the Junior World Cup. In the 2014/15 season, he became a medalist in the team sprint event at the U20 World Cup, and in the 2015/16 season, he won multiple gold medals and achieved podium finishes in individual disciplines.

Success at Junior Championships

At the 2016 Junior World Championships in Changchun, China, Liiv won a bronze medal in the 1000m distance, finished fifth in the 1500m, tenth in the 500m, and fourth in the all-around. His performances at the junior level showcased his potential and marked him as a promising speed skater.

Transition to Senior Competitions

In 2015, Liiv participated in the Estonian Senior Championships for the first time and emerged as the champion in all distances and the all-around event. He continued his success in national championships throughout his career and currently holds national records in the 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m distances as of December 2017.

International Achievements

Since the 2015/16 season, Liiv has been competing in the World Cup events against senior skaters. He finished 16th in the sprint all-around at the 2017 European Championships and achieved 18th and 16th place finishes in the 500m and 1000m distances, respectively, at the 2018 European Championships in Kolomna.

Olympic Participation

Liiv earned the opportunity to represent Estonia at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. His selection for the Olympic team was a testament to his dedication and skill in speed skating. He also participated in roller skating competitions, becoming a champion and medalist in Estonian championships.
