Childhood and Youth

Martin Sheen's real name is Ramón Gerardo Antonio Estévez. He was born in 1940 as the seventh child of Spanish father and Irish mother immigrants. Growing up in a modest and devout Catholic family, Sheen faced the loss of his mother at the age of 11. With the help of the Holy Trinity Church, his father managed to raise their large family. Sheen received his education at Chaminade, a Catholic high school. Despite battling polio as a child, Sheen recovered and developed a love for acting.

Sheen's father insisted that he pursue a "serious" profession and attend university. However, Sheen's passion for acting led him to drop out of college. He took on odd jobs, such as car washing and delivery services, to sustain himself while pursuing his acting career. Sheen faced difficulties with his birth name during auditions, so he decided to adopt the stage name Martin Sheen. Despite this change, he did not legally change his name, and his official documents still bear his birth name, Ramón Estévez.

Sheen's stage career began on Broadway in New York City. In 1964, he landed a role in the musical "Never Too Late." He then transitioned to the film industry, starting with small roles in various television series during the 1960s. Sheen's first notable role in a feature film came in 1968 when he appeared in the film adaptation of a Broadway musical from 1964. One of Sheen's favorite film roles is that of Kit in the crime drama "Badlands" in 1973. However, his breakthrough moment came in 1979 when he starred in the war film "Apocalypse Now," directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film garnered critical acclaim and solidified Sheen's reputation as a talented dramatic actor.

In 1961, Sheen married artist Janet Templeton. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2011 and has remained together throughout Sheen's successful career. Sheen's second son, Carlos, is better known by his stage name Charlie Sheen and has become a prominent Hollywood figure.
