Martin Ziguélé: Former Prime Minister and Presidential Candidate
Early Life and CareerMartin Ziguélé was born in the Central African Republic (CAR). He rose to prominence as a prominent politician and served as Prime Minister of CAR from April 1, 2001, until he was forced to resign on March 15, 2003, when a coup led by François Bozizé overthrew the government of President Ange-Félix Patassé.
Exile and Return
After leaving office, Ziguélé went into exile in France. However, he soon returned to active politics. Despite an initial ban on his participation in the 2005 presidential elections, Ziguélé was registered as a presidential candidate on January 4, 2005, alongside six other candidates. The ban was eventually lifted for all candidates except Patassé, after which his party, the Movement for the Liberation of the Central African People, endorsed Ziguélé's candidacy.
2005 Presidential Elections
The elections were held on March 13, 2005, and Ziguélé came in second place with 23.5% of the vote, according to official figures. In the runoff against Bozizé, Ziguélé attempted to distance himself from Patassé but ultimately lost with 35.4% of the vote.
Post-Election Activities
Following his electoral defeat, Ziguélé remained active in politics. He continued to advocate for peace and democracy in CAR, and he played a significant role in the country's peace process. In recent years, Ziguélé has been a vocal critic of the current government and has called for political change.
