Mary Baker Eddy: Founder of Christian Science

Early Life and Beliefs

Mary Morse Baker was born in Bow, New Hampshire, in 1821. As a child, she struggled with chronic illnesses. Drawn to biblical teachings, she questioned the concepts of predestination and original sin. At age 17, she joined the Congregationalist Church.

Marriages and Challenges

In 1843, Mary married George Glover, who died from yellow fever the following year. In 1853, she married dentist Daniel Patterson, whose family ostracized her and whose infidelities led to the couple's financial ruin.

Influence of Phineas Quimby

In 1862, Mary consulted with magnetic healer Phineas Quimby. His treatments provided some relief and influenced her future worldview.

The Birth of Christian Science

Following Quimby's death, Mary's health worsened. She turned to the Bible and began to believe that the miracles performed by Jesus were rooted in scientific principles. In 1875, she published "Science and Health" (later renamed "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"), outlining the tenets of Christian Science.

In 1879, the Church of Christ, Scientist was established under Mary's leadership. The church gained popularity among those suffering from illnesses.

Personal Life and Legacy

Mary divorced Patterson in 1873. In 1877, she married Asa Gilbert Eddy, who died in 1882. Mark Twain published a satirical critique of Christian Science in 1903. Mary Baker Eddy passed away in 1910 and was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her teachings continue to inspire the Christian Science movement today.
