Mary Virginia Martin was an American actress of the theater, film, and television. She was once an extremely popular figure in the entertainment industry. Some of her most famous roles included Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific" and Maria in "The Sound of Music". Today, the famous Kennedy Center is named after her.
Early Life and Family
Mary Virginia Martin was born on December 1, 1913, in the United States. Her childhood was peaceful and happy, as she wrote in her autobiography. The future actress had a close and friendly relationship with her parents, as well as her siblings. In her autobiography, Mary Martin also wrote about her talent for music as a child and how she delighted her loved ones with her instinctive ability to reproduce musical sounds. Her father, Preston Martin, was a lawyer, and her mother, Juanita Presley, was a violin teacher.
Acting Career
When Mary Martin was pregnant with her, doctors warned her mother about the dangers associated with childbirth. However, Juanita was so determined to have a son that she refused to listen to the doctors. She eventually gave birth to a girl, who would become the famous Mary Martin. The entire district celebrated her birth. As a young girl, Mary fearlessly climbed trees and rode horses. She was very active. In 1980, Mary Martin made her final stage appearance at the "Royal Variety Performance" in London. Two years later, she was involved in an accident that significantly undermined her health. The actress passed away on November 3, 1990, in her own home in California.
