Early Life and Education
Mariyana Sadovska, a Ukrainian singer, actress, composer, and educator, was born on April 23, 1972, in Lviv, Ukraine. Her father, Viktor Morozov, was a singer and translator, while her mother, Ekaterina Nemira, was an artist.
In 1991, Sadovska graduated with honors from the S. Liudkevych Lviv Music College, majoring in piano. Simultaneously, she completed a course at the Les Kurbas Lviv Theater, where she went on to perform for three years.
Exploration and International Collaborations
The following decade, Sadovska resided in Poland and worked at the Gdańsk Centre for Theatre Practices. During her time there, she delved into folklore research in Ukraine, Ireland, Egypt, Cuba, and Brazil. She also toured extensively throughout Europe and performed at acclaimed festivals worldwide.
In 2001, Sadovska relocated to New York City and joined the international arts collective Yara Arts Group. She conducted workshops and performed with La MaMa Experimental Theater. Her solo career flourished in the U.S. with the release of her debut album, "Songs I Learned in Ukraine" (2002), featuring material from her folklore expeditions.
Folklore Preservation and Recognition
Sadovska's research and preservation efforts continue to this day. She shares her findings through seminars and workshops at music festivals and academic institutions. In 2003, she collaborated with Polish radio, Yara Arts Group, and UNESCO to release the album "Budemo vesnu spivat," showcasing authentic Ukrainian polyphony.
Her work with Teatr Farma in Viet Skinni earned her a nomination for the prestigious Alfred Radok Award for Best Theater Music. In 2006, her band Borderlands won the Creole World Music Contest.
Performing Style and Repertoire
Sadovska's unique performance style blends authentic folk songs with theatrical interpretations. Her goal is to evoke the images and stories embedded within the music. She meticulously selects songs with historical and personal significance.
Beyond Ukrainian songs, Sadovska incorporates pieces from various cultures into her repertoire, including Polish, Jewish, and Czech. To make the lyrics accessible to international audiences, she occasionally performs Ukrainian songs in English.
Current Activities and Personal Life
Today, Sadovska resides in Cologne, Germany, and works internationally. She has released three solo albums and has showcased her artwork, theater roles, and film scores.
She performs both as a soloist and with the German jazz trio Borderlands, which comprises Jarry Singla (piano), Peter Kahlenborn (drums/percussion), and Sebastian Gramss (cello/double bass).
Sadovska is married to Andre Erlen, a theater director and actor from Cologne. Together, they have two children, Severin and Agafya.
