Early Career and Game Development

Masato Kato began his career as a game developer and scenario writer at Tecmo, where he contributed to projects such as the "Captain Tsubasa" soccer game and the "Ninja Gaiden" action series. He later joined Gainax and eventually made the transition to Square.

Notable Works at Square

Kato's most renowned contributions include storylines for acclaimed games at Square, including "Chrono Trigger" (based on sketches by Yuji Hori), "Radical Dreamers: Nusumenai Hōseki," "Chrono Cross," and "Xenogears."

Freelance Career and Collaborations

Upon leaving Square after completing the scenario for "Final Fantasy XI: Rise of the Zilart," Kato became a freelance writer. While working on games for various companies, he continued to collaborate with Square on projects such as the "World of Mana" series, an enhanced port of "Chrono Trigger" for the Nintendo DS, and additional chapters for "Final Fantasy XI."

Five Seasons of kiЯit

In 2005, Kato collaborated with composer Yasunori Mitsuda, a long-time friend. Kato penned the short story "Five Seasons of kiЯit," which Mitsuda scored with music that was later released on his kiЯit album. The story and music were also performed as an opera.
