Masatomo Sumitomo's Early Life and Buddhist Devotion

Born in 1585, Masatomo Sumitomo lived the first 30 years of his life as a dedicated Buddhist monk. At the age of 12, he entered the monastic order at his parents' urging and eventually became a disciple of the monk Kugen. However, following Kugen's death, Sumitomo faced a difficult decision: to continue his monastic life or to support himself.

A Path to Entrepreneurship

Driven by a desire to help others, Sumitomo found an alternative path. In 1630, he established a medicine shop, marking the foundation of what would become one of Japan's largest industrial conglomerates, Sumitomo Group.

Succession and the Rise of Sumitomo

After Sumitomo's death, his legacy was carried on by Soga Riemon, who married Sumitomo's sister and adopted the Sumitomo surname. Together with Riemon's children, they ventured into the copper smelting business, which brought the Sumitomo name to prominence.
