Biography of Masha Archer

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Masha Archer, also known as Maria Muhina-Archer, is an American jewelry designer. She comes from a family of artists and art teachers, Sofia and Mykola Muhina, who instilled in her a love for creativity. After spending several years in Europe following World War II, her family immigrated to the United States in 1949. Masha currently resides in San Francisco with her late husband, photographer Charles Archer, and their two daughters, Maya and Larisa.

Early Career and Education

Masha Archer studied painting and graphic design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She later worked as a restorer at the National Museum of Mexico in Mexico City and pursued a career in fashion design.

Focus on Jewelry Design

After gaining experience in fashion design, Masha Archer shifted her focus to jewelry design, where she gained recognition and praise. In 1995, she was honored with the title of "Wearable Art Jeweler, USA" by the New York Fashion Group at an event organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her jewelry has been exhibited in various institutions, including the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Museum, Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson, Museum of Folk Art in Los Angeles, and Taos Art Museum in New Mexico.

Masha Archer's jewelry has been featured in films such as "Sex and the City" and its sequel, as well as "Confessions of a Shopaholic." In the documentary "Bill Cunningham: New York," her jewelry is worn by fashion expert Iris Apfel. Her designs have also been showcased on television shows like "Bones," "Martha Stewart's Living," "Burn Notice," and "Anderson Cooper Live." Ukrainian filmmaker Georgiy Vlasenko directed a documentary about Masha Archer titled "The Ritual of the Eye," which explores her life and work.
