Early Life and Education
Matthias Braschler was born in Aargau, Switzerland. He pursued a dual degree program in geography and contemporary art history at the University of Zurich. During his time there, he developed a keen interest in photography and went on to master the art through self-study.
Journalism and Career Beginnings
Braschler gained experience as a photographer by publishing his work in various Swiss newspapers and magazines. In 1998, he relocated to New York City, where his career took a significant turn.
Publication and Collaboration with Monika Fischer
In 1999, Braschler released his debut photography book, "Madison Avenue," from his New York studio. In 2003, he met Monika Fischer, a Swiss actress who had studied romance languages at the University of Zurich. Together, they began working on a series of portraits, culminating in the 2007 publication of "About Americans." The project involved extensive travel across the United States to capture a diverse range of subjects.
"Faces of Football" and Travels in China
Between 2005 and 2006, Fischer and Braschler collaborated on "Faces of Football," a photographic project that featured renowned soccer players captured at close range after significant matches, with support from FIFA. In 2007, they embarked on a seven-month journey through China, covering 30,000 kilometers and photographing Chinese citizens from various walks of life to highlight the country's social contrasts.
Climate Change and Global Recognition
In 2009, Fischer and Braschler released a powerful series of photographs documenting the human impacts of climate change. Their exceptional work has garnered numerous accolades, including the World Press Photo Award and the ADC Bronze Award. Braschler's and Fischer's photographs have graced the pages of international publications, appeared in almanacs, and been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide.
