Early Life and Education
Matthew D. Green was born in 1976 in Hanover, New Hampshire. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and Music from Oberlin College and later pursued graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he received both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science. Green's dissertation titled "Cryptography for Private Information Retrieval: Ensuring Data Access While Preserving Privacy" explored the intersection of cryptography and privacy protection.
Career
Green's professional career began in 1999 at AT&T Laboratories, where he worked on projects related to audio coding, video streaming, content protection, and wireless software localization. In 2005, he co-founded Independent Security Evaluators (ISE) with fellow Johns Hopkins graduate students and computer security expert Avi Rubin. ISE identifies and mitigates technical vulnerabilities through rigorous analysis. Green served as ISE's Technical Director until 2011.
Research Interests and Contributions
As an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University, Green specializes in applied cryptography, privacy-enhancing technologies, anonymous cryptocurrencies, elliptic curve cryptosystems, and satellite television security. He is a member of the team that developed the Zerocoin and Zerocash open-source privacy-enhancing cryptocurrencies and has also influenced the development of the Zcash cryptocurrency. Green has also been involved in exposing vulnerabilities in RSA BSAFE, Speedpass, and E-ZPass.
Involvement in Cybersecurity Initiatives
Green is actively engaged in cybersecurity initiatives. He serves on the technical advisory board of The Linux Foundation's Core Infrastructure Initiative, which addresses internet security issues following the discovery of the Heartbleed vulnerability in 2014. He also holds positions on the technical advisory boards for CipherCloud, Overnest, and Mozilla Cybersecurity Delphi.
Author and Blogger
Green maintains a blog titled "A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering" where he discusses topics related to cryptography, security, and privacy. In September 2013, a blog post titled "On the NSA" led to a request from the Dean of Johns Hopkins University to remove the post, which criticized the National Security Agency (NSA) for "weakening cryptography for their own ends." Green was accused of using classified material and the NSA logo. However, the university later apologized and the post was reinstated, sparking discussions about academic freedom and censorship.
Other Contributions
In addition to his work on privacy-enhancing cryptocurrencies and cybersecurity, Green has also contributed to the exposure of vulnerabilities in the Dual_EC_DRBG pseudorandom number generator developed by the NSA and the use of a flawed CSPRNG by RSA Security. He actively teaches courses related to practical cryptography at Johns Hopkins University.
