Matt Barlow: From Metal Warrior to Officer and Back
Early Life and Iced EarthMatt Barlow is an American rock musician best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Iced Earth. He joined the band in 1995 after the departure of John Greely and made his debut on the album "Burnt Offerings." Barlow's powerful vocals and passionate performances quickly established him as a fan favorite.
Departure from Iced Earth (2003)
In 2003, Barlow left Iced Earth amidst much speculation. While personal reasons were cited as the driving force behind his departure, many fans believed it was due to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, which led Barlow to re-evaluate his priorities. He expressed a desire to contribute to the "real world" rather than live the "rock star" fantasy.
Law Enforcement Career and The First State Force Band
Barlow became a police officer in the Georgetown Police Department in Delaware. He also performed as a vocalist in The First State Force Band, a group comprised of law enforcement officers from Delaware. The band primarily performed in schools, promoting positive values through music.
Return to Music (2007)
In 2007, Barlow made his musical comeback as the new vocalist for the Danish progressive metal band Pyramaze. He accepted the offer because it allowed him to balance his music career with his police work. However, in December of the same year, it was announced that Barlow had officially reunited with Iced Earth for subsequent albums and tours.
Re-Departure from Iced Earth (2011)
In 2011, Barlow announced his second departure from Iced Earth, citing family obligations and the inability to commit to extensive touring. His final performance with the band was at the Wacken Open Air festival in August, where he bid farewell to the thousands in attendance.
Ashes of Ares and Beyond
In 2012, Barlow formed the metal band Ashes of Ares with former Iced Earth bassist Freddie Vidales and former Nevermore drummer Van Williams. The band released their debut album in 2013 and has continued to perform and record. Barlow has also contributed vocal work to other metal bands, including Artizan's.
