Mikhail Nikolaevich Alekseev: A Legendary Soviet War Pilot
Mikhail Nikolaevich Alekseev was a distinguished Soviet military aviator who played a significant role in both the Soviet-Finnish and Великой Отечественной войн (Great Patriotic War).
Early Life and Military Service
Born on 23 May (5 June) 1911, in the village of Russkoe, Alekseev hailed from a rural family. He completed his secondary education and worked as a turner before joining the Red Army in 1933. In 1938, he graduated from the Kharkiv Military Aviation School.
Soviet-Finnish War and Early World War II
Alekseev actively participated in the Soviet-Finnish War and later in the initial stages of the Великой Отечественной войн. In August 1941, he notably carried out bombing raids on Berlin.
Heroism during the Great Patriotic War
As a captain in the 19th Guards Aviation Regiment, Alekseev distinguished himself in the conflict. He flew 209 боевых вылетов (combat missions) on bombing operations deep behind enemy lines. His exceptional bravery earned him the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 27 July 1943.
Post-War Career
After the war, Alekseev continued his military career. In 1951, he attended the Higher Military Aviation School of Navigators. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1955.
Later Life and Legacy
Alekseev resided in the city of Frunze (now Bishkek) after his retirement. He passed away on 25 October 1986, leaving behind a legacy of valor and dedication to his country.
