Michael Schenker, a German rock guitarist, was born on January 10, 1955, in Sarstedt, Germany.
Early Career
Schenker began his musical career at the age of 16 when he and his brother Rudolf formed the band Scorpions in 1971. After recording their debut album "Lonesome Crow," Schenker was offered to replace Bernie Marsden in the band UFO. In June 1973, Schenker joined UFO, resulting in the band's music taking on a heavier sound. The album "Phenomenon," released in 1974, featured classic metal tracks such as "Doctor, Doctor" and "Rock Bottom," showcasing Schenker's exceptional guitar skills.
Michael Schenker Group
After a series of outstanding albums, Schenker left UFO in 1978 due to conflicts with vocalist Phil Mogg. He returned to Germany and briefly reunited with Scorpions, contributing his guitar skills to their 1979 album "Lovedrive." Shortly after, Schenker formed his own group called the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). The lineup of MSG constantly changed as Schenker hired and fired musicians seemingly based on his whim. Vocalists in the group have included Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet, and Robin McAuley.
Contraband and Recent Years
In 1991, Schenker took a creative break from MSG to participate in the one-off project Contraband, which also included musicians from Shark Island, Vixen, Ratt, and L.A. Guns. The album released by Contraband showcased impressive collaborations, including covers of Mott The Hoople's "All The Way From Memphis" and David Bowie's "Hang On To Yourself."
In the mid-90s, Schenker's creative spirit remained vibrant as he continued to record extensively in the studio and perform concerts, mainly in Europe. However, some experts believe that his recent works have been marked by a certain hastiness.
