Early Life and Education

Nobuko Motomura was born on November 7, 1927, in Tokyo, Japan. Her father was a businessman, while her mother was a homemaker. In 1947, she graduated from Tsuda College. She went on to earn a master's degree in law from the University of Tokyo in 1950.

Political Career

Ministry of Labor and Early Political Appointments

Motomura began her career in the Ministry of Labor, where she worked from 1950 to 1980. In 1980, she was elected to the House of Councillors, where she served for two terms. In 1996, she was elected to the House of Representatives.

Chief Cabinet Secretary and Minister of Education

On August 26, 1989, Motomura was appointed as Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She served in this role for six months before being dismissed in January 1990. From 1992 to 1993, she served as Minister of Education.

Minister of Justice

Motomura held the post of Minister of Justice from April 26, 2001, to November 19, 2003.

Later Career

Following her political career, Motomura served as the president of Hakuoh University from 2007 to 2013.

Personal Life

Nobuko Motomura is widowed from politician Kinji Moriyama.
