Mazzy Star is an American dream pop band formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1989. The band's languid and evocative sound has captivated listeners for over three decades.

Paisley Underground Roots

The origins of Mazzy Star can be traced to the Paisley Underground scene of the 1980s. David Roback, the band's guitarist, was an active participant in this California-based movement that revived psychedelic rock. His meeting with Hope Sandoval in Los Angeles marked the beginning of Mazzy Star.

Dreamy Debut and Chart Success

In 1990, Mazzy Star released their debut album, "She Hangs Brightly." The album blended elements of blues, folk, and psychedelic guitar. Despite their critical acclaim, Roback and Sandoval deliberately avoided commercial success, shunning interviews and maintaining a low profile.

Two years later, Mazzy Star released their sophomore album, "So Tonight That I Might See." The sound became more focused, and the album included their breakthrough single, "Fade into You." The song reached the American charts in 1995, propelling the album to platinum status.

Melancholic Masterpieces

Mazzy Star solidified their reputation as one of the most melancholic bands in American indie with the release of "Among My Swan" in 1996. The album featured a more stripped-down and acoustic sound.

Hiatus and Return

After a brief tour, Mazzy Star went on an extended hiatus. They made a surprise return in 2011 with the release of two new tracks. In 2013, they released their fourth full-length album, "Seasons of Your Day."
