Biography of Megan Shaughnessy

Megan Shaughnessy is an American tennis player who was born on April 13, 1979, in Richmond, Virginia. She began her tennis career at a young age and started training with Rafael Font de Mora when she was 13 years old. Her powerful serve became her trademark in the game.

Early Life and Family

Megan Shaughnessy's father, Bill, is a stockbroker, and her mother, Joy, is a dietician. She has two brothers, Brennan and Matt, and a sister named Maeve.

Tennis Career

Shaughnessy made her debut in the WTA tournaments in 1996 at the Budapest tournament. By 1998, she had broken into the Top 100 rankings. In 2000, she won her first WTA singles title in Beijing and reached the Top 50. The following year, in 2001, she had a breakthrough season, reaching the 11th position in the world rankings. She won her second singles title in Quebec City and reached the finals in Hamburg and Scottsdale. Shaughnessy also achieved notable victories against top-ranked players such as Conchita Martinez, Monica Seles, and Venus Williams.

In 2002, Shaughnessy reached the finals of the Sydney tournament and regained her 11th position in the rankings. The following year, she became the leader of the Canberra tournament and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, her first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance. In 2004, Shaughnessy dropped to the Top 40, but she had success in doubles, winning seven tournaments with partner Nadia Petrova, including the WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles.

Injuries and Later Career

Shaughnessy started the 2005 season with a leg injury, which forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open and the Hyderabad tournament. However, she reached the final of the Memphis tournament in February, defeating Nicole Vaidišová in the semifinals. She then struggled with a back injury throughout the spring season. In July, her ranking dropped significantly, and she had to go through qualifying rounds for the Palo Alto tournament. In 2006, Shaughnessy won the WTA tournament in Rabat, becoming the first American to win a WTA title that year and reaching the final in another tournament.

Throughout her career, Shaughnessy has frequently played doubles, often partnering with fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. They reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters in 2011 but fell short to Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina.

Personal Life

Shaughnessy was in a romantic relationship with her coach Rafael Font de Mora, which started before she turned 18. However, their relationship ended in 2005, along with their professional partnership. They reunited in the second half of 2006, with Font de Mora becoming Shaughnessy's coach again.

Apart from tennis, Shaughnessy enjoys water skiing, hiking in scenic places, practicing yoga, and indulging in good food. She has a passion for interior design, laundry, and everything related to her home. Her favorite actor is Harrison Ford.
