Early Life and Education
Mehmet Gunsur was born in Istanbul, Turkey on May 8, 1975, to an intellectual family. His father, Teoman Gunsur, was a physicist, while his mother, Sibel, was an educator. His elder sister, Zeynep, pursued modern dance and later became a choreographer.
From a tender age, Gunsur's family and friends recognized his charisma and talent for performing. At six, he featured in a TV commercial, and by seven, he was actively involved in various castings. As a teenager, he was the face of "Mavi Jeans" and later promoted the footwear brand "Hotiс."
Despite completing high school in Italy, Gunsur returned to Istanbul to pursue higher education. He enrolled at Marmara University, majoring in Mass Communications. During his university years, he continued to star in commercials, ensuring his financial stability. Gunsur also excelled in sports such as tennis and skiing, even receiving an offer to join the national team, which he declined.
Film and Television Career
Gunsur's acting debut came at age 14 with a minor role in the 1989 melodrama "Mimosa Blooms in the Spring." His breakout performance occurred in Ferzan Özpetek's acclaimed 1997 drama "Hamam," where he played a young Italian man who travels to Istanbul to inherit his aunt's bathhouse.
Over the next few years, Gunsur starred in various projects, including the Italian television biblical series "Friends of Jesus" and the drama "Don Matteo." He also appeared in the films "The Italian" (2002) and "Now He's a Soldier" (2003), for which he won the prestigious "Golden Orange Award."
His versatility as an actor became apparent in films like "Tell, Istanbul!" (2005), an anthology film that showcased the lives of ordinary Istanbul residents. In 2005, he joined the cast of the popular Turkish soap opera "Princess of the Cotton Fields."
Gunsur has also worked with international filmmakers, as evidenced by his role as detective Stefan Kercek in the American thriller "Reaper" (2007) alongside Dominique Swain and David Carradine. His other international credits include "Close Your Eyes" (2008), "The Voice" (2010), and "Weddings and Other Disasters" (2010).
"Magnificent Century" and Global Recognition
Gunsur's international fame soared with his portrayal of Mustafa, the son of Süleyman and Mahidevran in the Turkish historical drama "Magnificent Century" (2012-2014). His performance captivated audiences in over 50 countries where the series was broadcasted, including Russia and Italy.
Personal Life
Gunsur married Italian documentary filmmaker Caterina Mongio in 2006. They have three children: Ali, Maya, and Chloe. Gunsur is highly protective of his family's privacy and rarely speaks about them in interviews.
Recent Projects
In recent years, Gunsur has continued to star in both Turkish and international productions. He reunited with director Ferzan Özpetek for the 2017 drama "Istanbul Red," which also featured Halit Ergenç and Tuba Büyüküstün. He also played the lead role in the melodramatic series "Fi Ci Pi" (2017) and the drama "The Seagull's Lord" (2017).
