Melanie Zanetti: From Obscurity to Hollywood Success
Melanie Zanetti, an Australian actress, rose to fame after a decade of hard work and dedication in the entertainment industry. She is now a sought-after talent in film, theater, and commercials both in her home country of Australia and beyond.
Early Life and Education
Born on March 20, 1985, in Brisbane, Australia, Melanie Zanetti grew up with her younger sister, Elizabeth, in a family of Italian descent. From an early age, she had a passion for the arts but believed acting was only for the exceptionally beautiful or delusional. Not considering herself either, she initially pursued a different creative outlet in journalism. While successful in her studies, she felt unfulfilled and knew she needed a change.
Encouraged by her parents, Zanetti enrolled in the University of Southern Queensland in 2007 and earned her Bachelor of Theater Arts degree. A diligent student, she excelled in her studies, always striving for perfection. However, a professor advised her to break free from the rules and embrace vulnerability to become a truly great actress. She didn't heed this advice right away.
Breakthrough in Theater and Film
Zanetti made her acting debut in 2008 with a small role in the crime series "The Strip." Over the next several years, she played minor characters in mostly short films and forgettable TV shows. In 2009, she began performing on stage at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and later other theaters across Australia. She starred in critically acclaimed productions such as Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion," and Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights." In 2010, she won a Matilda Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her performance in "The Laugh Sisters."
Overcoming Obstacles
Early in her career, Zanetti struggled with self-doubt, fearing rejection and financial instability. In 2016, after a six-month period of unemployment, she reached a breaking point. Desperate, she recalled her professor's advice and surrendered to the unknown. She learned to let go of control, embrace her vulnerability, trust her intuition, and take risks. Zanetti now believes that fortune favors the bold and she goes into auditions even when she feels certain she won't get the part.
Success in Voice Acting and "Gabriel's Inferno"
During her unemployment period, Zanetti also tried her hand at voice acting and found success. In 2018, she became the voice of the title character in the Disney+ animated series "Bluey," which she considers a highlight of her career. The show has gained international acclaim and is currently in its third season. In 2020, she also voiced a character in the adventure-fantasy film "Love and Monsters."
Zanetti's biggest on-screen break came with the lead role in the erotic drama "Gabriel's Inferno," which began filming in New York City in fall 2019. Based on the popular novel by anonymous Canadian author Sylvain Reynard, the film follows the love story between a mysterious college professor, Gabriel, and his student, Julianne. The adaptation was over five hours long, and the showrunners divided it into three films, which were released in spring, summer, and fall 2020.
In the same year, filming for the sequel, "Gabriel's Rapture," began but was halted due to the pandemic. Production resumed in Florence in spring 2021, and like its predecessor, it was released as a trilogy. The first part premiered in fall 2021, with the second and third parts following in 2022. Additionally, producers are currently working on adapting the third book in the series, "Gabriel's Redemption."
Personal Life
Melanie Zanetti is in a long-term relationship with musician and businessman Sasha Baronoff, whom she has been dating for over five years.
Recent Projects
Among Zanetti's recent projects is the mystery-thriller "The Pale Blue Eye," based on a fictionalized episode from Edgar Allan Poe's life and drawn from his personal diaries. In the film, a young West Point cadet played by William Moseley and four friends venture to the titular town and encounter a series of haunting events that inspire him to abandon his military career and become a writer. The film was released in 2022.
