Early Life and Education

Meletiy Yemelyanovich Kychura was born into a priest's family on January 21, 1881. He attended high school in Lviv and went on to study law at the universities of Vienna and Lviv.

Military Service and Captivity

In August 1914, Kychura was drafted into the Austrian army and fought on the Galician front. He was captured by the Russians and deported to Siberia.

Return to Ukraine

After 1918, Kychura settled in Kyiv. He worked in the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and taught German language. In 1930, he became the editor of the literary magazine "Western Ukraine."

Literary Contributions

Kychura authored several collections of poetry and literary criticism. He also translated works by Charles Baudelaire, Juliusz Słowacki, and Friedrich Schiller into Ukrainian, and the poetry of Lesya Ukrainka and Taras Shevchenko into German.

Persecution and Death

In 1933, Kychura was arrested by the NKVD. He died in a prison camp on March 3, 1938. He was posthumously rehabilitated.
