Early LifeMelvin De Groot was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, to Luis De Groote and Jennie De Groote. He had a mixed heritage of Dutch and Jewish blood running through his veins. After completing his schooling, Melvin enrolled at Ohio State University and graduated in 1915 with a degree in chemical technology. He later obtained a second degree in chemistry from the same university in 1942. In 1955, Melvin was awarded an honorary doctorate.
