Early Life and Education
Michael Anthony Richards was born on July 24, 1949, in Culver City, California. His mother worked as a librarian in a medical archive, while his father was an electrical engineer. Richards was raised without any specific religious traditions. After spending two years in the army during the Vietnam War, he ended up in Germany, serving in the 5th Army of the United States in Europe.
Richards attended the California Institute of the Arts and earned a bachelor's degree in drama from The Evergreen State College in 1975. During this time, he developed an interest in improvisational comedy and performed with actor Ed Begley. He then enrolled in Los Angeles Valley College and continued to participate in student productions. Afterward, Richards spent several years in a commune in the Santa Cruz Mountains, exploring his identity.
Stand-up Comedy and Career
In 1979, Richards started his career as a stand-up comedian and gained national recognition when he appeared on Billy Crystal's cable show. He subsequently became a regular performer on ABC's late-night show. Before his breakthrough role in "Seinfeld" in 1990, Richards appeared as a guest star in numerous television shows, including "Cheers," "Night Court," "Miami Vice," and "St. Elsewhere."
In addition to his television work, Richards also had roles in several films, including "So I Married an Axe Murderer" (1993), "Airheads" (1994), "Young Doctors in Love" (1982), "The Problem Child" (1990), "Coneheads" (1993), and "UHF" (1989). While "Seinfeld" was airing, Richards reprised his role as Kramer in an episode of the romantic sitcom "Mad About You."
After "Seinfeld" ended in 2000, Richards starred in his own sitcom called "The Michael Richards Show." However, the ratings were low, and only seven episodes were aired before the show was canceled. Following the cancellation, Richards took a break from acting and returned to his roots in stand-up comedy. However, in 2006, he faced controversy when he used racial epithets towards an audience during his stand-up performances, which led to him exiting the comedy scene in 2007.
In 2009, Richards made a guest appearance as himself in three episodes of the seventh season of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," reuniting with his "Seinfeld" colleagues. The idea and direction of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" were developed by Larry David, the creator of "Seinfeld."
Personal Life
In 1974, Richards married casting director Cathleen Lyons, and they have a daughter named Sophia. However, they divorced in 1992. Currently, Richards resides in Glendale, California. In 2007, he announced his engagement to actress Beth Skipp, but they have not yet married. The couple embarked on a spiritual journey to Cambodia in the same year, where they planned to visit some temples and seek spiritual guidance. Richards is also a member of a Masonic Lodge.
