Michael Norman: Track and Field Prodigy
Born on December 3, 1997, in San Diego, California, Michael Norman is an American track and field athlete who made history at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Early Success at Vista Murrieta High School
As a student at Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, California, Norman shattered the NFHS record in the 400-meter run, clocking in at an astonishing 45.19 seconds at the 2015 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championships. This achievement tied him with Aldrich Bailey as the fastest 400-meter runners among high schoolers in the United States.
Breaking Boundaries in Junior Competitions
Norman's remarkable talent extended beyond the 400-meter distance. On June 13, 2015, he stunned observers by winning the 100-meter race at the Adidas Dream 100m at the Adidas Grand Prix with a time of 10.36 seconds. This was his debut 100-meter race, and he left an unforgettable impression on the nation's top sprinters.
On June 27, 2015, Norman set another California state record in the 200-meter dash at the 2015 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field. His time of 20.24 seconds placed him fifth all-time among high school competitors. This accomplishment earned him a spot on the United States team for the 2015 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, but he opted to decline to extend his competitive season.
Gatorade Player of the Year and NCAA Success
Norman's impressive performances throughout the 2015 season culminated in his recognition as the Gatorade Player of the Year for track and field. He became only the 28th junior athlete to receive this prestigious award in its 30-year history, and the first-ever male sprinter to earn the honor.
Moving on to collegiate competition, Norman continued to excel at the University of Southern California (USC). On March 10, 2018, at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, he set American and collegiate records in the 400-meter run with a world-leading time of 44.52 seconds. Later that day, he teamed up with his USC 4x400-meter relay squad to break the American and collegiate records again, clocking a world-best time of 3:00.77. While this relay time was faster than the official world record, it was not ratified due to various technicalities, including the ineligibility of teammate Rai Benjamin to represent the United States at the time.
Professional Career and Olympic Glory
Norman made his professional debut on June 30, 2018, at the 2018 IAAF Diamond League in Paris, where he won the 200-meter race with a personal best time of 19.84 seconds. He also achieved a personal best in the 100-meter sprint on July 20, 2020, running 9.86 seconds.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Norman reached the pinnacle of his career by contributing to the United States' victory in the 4x400-meter relay, alongside teammates Michael Cherry, Bryce Deadmon, and Rai Benjamin.
