Early Life and Career
Michael Ashley Ball was born on June 27, 1962, in Bromsgrove, United Kingdom. He grew up near Stratford-upon-Avon, with his older brother Kevin and younger sister Catherine. Although he never lived in Wales, Michael considers himself Welsh as his mother was from there.
During his childhood, Michael participated in theatrical productions and later attended the Guildford School of Acting. While he initially envisioned a career in dramatic theater, those around him believed he was meant for musical theater.
In 1984, Michael, who had never taken vocal lessons, played the roles of Judas and John the Baptist in the renowned biblical musical "Godspell." He also portrayed Frederick in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta "The Pirates of Penzance." Producer Cameron Mackintosh noticed Michael and invited him to audition for the role of Marius in the London production of the musical "Les Misérables" by Boublil and Schönberg. Michael was chosen, and his West End debut took place in 1985.
Success in Musicals
Michael's portrayal of Marius in "Les Misérables" was highly acclaimed, and he fought to keep the powerful and emotional song "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" in the production when the director considered cutting it. His persistence paid off, as the song became a hit.
Following his success in "Les Misérables," Michael joined the London production of "The Phantom of the Opera" in 1987, taking over the role of Raoul. He performed alongside Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. The composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, noticed Michael's talent and cast him as Alex in his new musical "Aspects of Love" in 1988. Michael's rendition of "Love Changes Everything" became his signature song.
In 1989, Michael appeared in the London production of "Aspects of Love" and received the Variety Club award for Most Promising Actor for his role as Alex. He continued to find success on Broadway as well.
In 1992, Michael decided to focus on his solo career, embarking on several concert tours across the UK and performing at prestigious venues. He released multiple albums, appeared on radio and television, and participated in gala performances. His debut album, self-titled "Michael Ball," featured the hit songs "Love Changes Everything" and "One Step Out of Time."
Continued Success and Ventures
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Michael continued to release albums and perform in concerts and musicals. He appeared in the film "England, My England" in 1995, showcasing his dramatic acting abilities.
In 2002, Michael took on the role of eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts in the musical "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" at the London Palladium.
Outside of his career, Michael has been in a long-term relationship with his partner Katie, although they are not married. He is accompanied by his loyal Tibetan Terrier named Yogi. Michael enjoys fashion from Armani and has a fondness for expensive cars. He considers sleeping and having fun as his hobbies. He also has a love for food, particularly sushi and dishes with Indian curry seasoning.
Michael's favorite musical remains "Les Misérables," and he dreams of playing the role of Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard."
