Early Life and Military Career

Mykhailo Doroshenko first appears in historical records in 1621, commanding a regiment at the Battle of Khotyn against the Turks. He also participated in Petro Sahaidachny's campaign against Moscow.

Rise to Power

Doroshenko emerged as a leader among the Cossack elite who sought compromise with the Polish government. Elected as hetman amidst an anti-Polish uprising, he signed the Treaty of Kurukove (1625) with Polish commander Stanisław Koniecpolski, formally establishing the Cossack military organization.

Hetmancy

As hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks (1625-1628), Doroshenko fostered friendly relations with the Crimean Tatars. He organized a Cossack expedition to Crimea in support of Khan Mehmed III Giray and Qalğa Shahin Giray in their struggle against the Turks and their allies in Crimea.

Alliance with Crimea

The Cossack-Crimean alliance against the Ottoman Empire persisted even after Doroshenko's death. This union helped secure the Cossacks' autonomy and weakened the Ottoman Empire's hold over the region.

Death and Legacy

Doroshenko was killed in battle against the Turks near Bakhchisaray on May 31, 1628. His legacy as a skilled military leader and diplomat left a lasting mark on Ukrainian history.
