American Cellist

Early Years and Training

American cellist was born in New York City and began his musical journey studying under Karl Ziegler. He later enrolled at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, where he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned teacher Orlando Cole.

Rising Star

During his student days, he achieved recognition by winning the Naumburg International Cello Competition in 1957, propelling his career forward.

Principal Cellist

He joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he held the position of principal cellist from 1964 to 1977. Subsequently, he became the principal cellist of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1977, a position he continues to hold.

Chamber Musician

Beyond his orchestral performances, the cellist has also established himself as an accomplished chamber musician. He has recorded the complete cello sonatas of Prokofiev with pianist Janet Guggenheim and performed all of Rachmaninoff's cello and piano works. Notably, he has collaborated with Malcolm Frager to perform the complete Beethoven cello and piano sonatas.
