Biography of Duff McKagan
Duff McKagan, also known as Michael Andrew McKagan, is an American rock musician. He was born on December 22, 1964, in Seattle and grew up in a musical family. Duff is best known for his 13-year tenure as the bassist for the heavy rock band Guns N' Roses. He currently plays bass for the band Velvet Revolver and leads his own punk rock project called Duff McKagan's Loaded.
Early Life and Musical Career
Duff McKagan was the youngest of eight children in his family, where everyone could play at least one instrument. His brother Bruce taught him how to play the bass guitar, which became his main instrument. At the age of 14, Duff joined the pop-punk band "Fastbacks" as a drummer. From 1979 to 1982, he was the lead guitarist for the punk band "The Living," which was one of the most famous bands in Seattle at the time. After the breakup of "The Living," Duff joined "The Fartz," where he showcased his piano skills in the song "Misery."
Guns N' Roses and Solo Career
In 1985, Duff answered an advertisement in the newspaper seeking a bassist for a band in California called "Road Crew." To his surprise, the band turned out to be the future members of Guns N' Roses - guitarist Slash and drummer Steven Adler. After two days of rehearsals, Guns N' Roses performed their first show at the Troubadour club. Duff eventually became the vocalist of the band and his punk rock background influenced their overall style.
In 1990, Duff collaborated with Slash on Iggy Pop's album "Brick by Brick" and began his solo career in 1993 with the album "Believe in Me." However, his personal struggles with drug addiction led to a life-threatening pancreas operation in 1994. After his recovery, Duff became sober and focused on his music career.
Velvet Revolver and Other Projects
In 2002, Duff joined the supergroup Velvet Revolver, consisting of former Guns N' Roses members Slash and Matt Sorum, as well as Dave Kushner and Scott Weiland. They released their debut album "Contraband" in 2004 and their second album "Libertad" in 2007.
Aside from his work with Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver, Duff has been involved in various other musical projects. He played guitar with "Alice in Chains" for the VH1 Decades of Rock Live show and contributed to albums by Mark Lanegan in 2001 and 2004. He also hosts a music radio show called "Duff McKagan's Radio-Loaded" on KISW 99.9FM in Seattle.
Throughout his career, Duff McKagan has had a significant impact on the rock music scene and continues to be a respected musician and songwriter.
