Early Life and Education

Mj Rodriguez was born in Newark, New Jersey, to an African-American mother and a Puerto Rican father. At the age of 11, Rodriguez's mother enrolled her in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. After graduating from the New Jersey School of the Arts high school, Rodriguez attended the Berklee College of Music.

Career Beginnings

As a freshman in college, Rodriguez landed the role of Angel in the Off-Broadway production of "Rent," which earned her a Clive Barnes Award. Following the musical's run in 2012, she began her transgender transition.

Rodriguez had guest-starring roles in the television series "Nurse Jackie," "The Carrie Diaries," and "Luke Cage" before making her film debut in "Saturday Church," for which she received a Tribeca Film Festival nomination for Best Actress.
