Early Life and Education

Michalis Sarris was born in 1946 and developed a keen interest in economics from a young age. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the London School of Economics, specializing in Monetary Theory and Policy.

Academic and Research Career

After completing his undergraduate degree, Sarris continued his education at Wayne State University in the United States, where he earned a doctorate in Economics. His research focused on monetary and fiscal policies.

Central Bank and World Bank Experience

In 1972, Sarris joined the Research Department of the Central Bank of Cyprus. In 1974, he assumed responsibility for evaluating long-term investment projects. In 1975, he was invited to join the World Bank, where he eventually rose to the position of Director.

Private Sector Career

In late 2004, Sarris left the World Bank to join the Board of Directors of the largest private banking group in Cyprus, Laiki Group. He held this position until his appointment as Finance Minister.

Appointment as Finance Minister

In the wake of Cyprus's financial crisis and its need to join the Eurozone, Sarris was appointed as Minister of Finance. His primary task was to oversee the country's entry into the Eurozone and implement necessary economic reforms.

Languages and Personal Life

In addition to Greek and English, Sarris is fluent in French, Spanish, and Portuguese. He is married, has two children, and five grandchildren.
