Monaghan was born in Winthrop, Iowa. Her mother, Sharon, ran a daycare center from their home, while her father, Bob, worked at a local factory and also did farming. She has two older brothers, Bob and John. Monaghan's family frequently provided shelter to homeless children and even adopted some of them.

Monaghan completed her schooling in 1994, where she was the class president and participated in several local productions. After graduation, she moved to Chicago to study journalism at Columbia College Chicago. During her studies, she started working as a model in the United States, Milan, Singapore, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Just a semester away from completing her degree, she decided to pursue an acting career in New York.

Acting Career

Monaghan's first notable roles were in the TV series 'Young Americans' and 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'. Her big screen debut came with a small role in the film 'Perfume', followed by another small role in 'Unfaithful' in 2002. She had her first significant breakthrough in 2002 when she landed the lead role of Kimberly Woods in the TV series 'Boston Public'. After a guest appearance for a whole season, she returned to the screen in projects such as 'It Runs in the Family', 'Winter Solstice', and 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'. She was also cast, but her scenes were eventually cut, in 'Constantine' and 'Syriana'. However, her audition tape for 'Constantine' allowed her to audition for 'Mission: Impossible III', where she landed the role of Julia opposite Tom Cruise.

Later Career

In 2007, Monaghan played the lead role in the comedy remake 'The Heartbreak Kid' alongside Ben Stiller, originally portrayed by Sybil Shepard. She then received critical acclaim for her performance in 'Gone Baby Gone'.
