Childhood and Early Life

Michaël Mawem, born on August 3, 1990, is a French competitive climber. Initially engaged in gymnastics, he and his elder brother, Bastien Mawem, discovered rock climbing. They joined the Alpi360 club in Village-Neuf, Haut-Rhin, when Mawem was 12 years old.

Career

Mawem trains in Voiron and specializes in bouldering. Despite his preference, he excels in all three disciplines necessary for the combined format. In 2017, he placed fourth in bouldering at the World Games in Wroclaw.

On August 19, 2019, he became the first French climber to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics, postponed to 2021. He and his brother Bastien secured quotas for France. At the European Championships in Zakopane, he won gold in bouldering and became the flag bearer for France at the 2019 World Beach Games in Doha.

Tokyo Olympics

In the 2020 Olympics, Mawem finished third in the speed climbing qualification, first in bouldering, and eleventh in lead climbing. Despite advancing to the finals, he placed seventh in lead climbing, losing his chance at a medal and finishing fifth overall.
