Early Life and Career
Migran Bastandjyan was born on February 1, 1913, in Sukhumi, Russian Empire (now the capital of Abkhazia). He came from a working-class family and completed his secondary education before working in a factory.
World War II Service
In 1941, Bastandjyan volunteered for the Red Army and entered combat in 1942. He fought in battles on the Caucasus, Ukraine, and Belarus, including the Battle of Stalingrad. During the war, he displayed exceptional courage and heroism.
Crossing the Dnieper
Bastandjyan's most famous act of valor occurred during the Dnieper River crossing operation on November 26, 1943. As a private in the 1118th Rifle Regiment, he led his unit in destroying the enemy's advance guard. Despite facing heavy counterattacks, he organized the defense of his battalion's left flank, repelling three enemy assaults.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On November 27, 1943, Bastandjyan led a counterattack against the German forces, repelling their advance and killing over 1,000 enemy soldiers and officers. For his exceptional bravery, he was recommended for the highest award of the Soviet Union, the Hero of the Soviet Union.
Recognition and Legacy
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on February 22, 1944, Bastandjyan was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, along with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal. After the war, he returned to Sukhumi, where he passed away suddenly in 1958 at the age of 45. Bastandjyan's memory is honored in his hometown and beyond as a symbol of Soviet patriotism and wartime heroism.
