Biography of Mikhail Gulko
Mikhail Alexandrovich Gulko is a Russian chanson singer-songwriter. He was born in Kharkov, Ukraine, into a family of a civil servant and an artist. Growing up, Gulko was surrounded by a musical atmosphere in his home. From a young age, he learned music and performed at amateur art evenings, accompanied by his mother on the accordion. Later, he began playing solo on the accordion.
Gulko completed his secondary school education and then attended the Moscow Polytechnic Institute, specializing in mining engineering. Throughout his studies, he continued his passion for music, singing and playing the accordion and piano. After graduating, Gulko worked as a mining engineer at a design institute and in the mines of the Donbas region.
He later moved to Kamchatka, where he became the leader of a vocal-instrumental ensemble. During this time, he also completed his music education at a local music school. Gulko eventually returned to Moscow, where he continued to lead vocal-instrumental ensembles.
In 1980, due to family circumstances (his daughter moved away), Gulko relocated to America. In New York, he continued working in his profession while pursuing his career as a musician and singer. In 1981, Gulko released his first vinyl album, "Blue Sky of Russia," featuring popular songs such as "Poruchik Golitsyn," "White Birch," "Train," and "Kolyma."
In 1984, he released his second album, "Burned Bridges," which included popular songs like "Gentlemen Officers," "Farewell to the Homeland," "Cigarette Butt," and "Birches in the Camp." In 1985, Gulko released the magnetic album "Songs of the War Years" to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Victory Day.
In 1996, he released the laser disc "Abroad," featuring several songs co-written with Mikhail Tanich, including the popular song "Young Years." Gulko has performed concerts worldwide, touring across Europe, Canada, America, and Australia.
He is also known as the host and author of the television program and radio show "Forgotten Melodies," which showcases the works of famous Russian singers such as Vertinsky, Leshchenko, and Kozin.
