Early Career in SwedenMikael Lustig, a robust defender, commenced his footballing journey at modest Swedish club Sandåkerns SK. In 2004, he ascended to Umeå FC, aiding them in securing promotion to the Superettan, Sweden's second tier, in 2005.
Sundsvall and Allsvenskan Debut
In August 2005, Lustig signed with Sundsvall FK. During his brief tenure, he netted two goals in eight Allsvenskan appearances. However, the team's abysmal performance led to their relegation. In 2006, Lustig became integral to the team's resurgence, scoring three goals in 28 matches. The following year, Sundsvall finished third in the Superettan, earning promotion back to the top flight.
Norwegian Success with Rosenborg
Lustig's exceptional form attracted the attention of Rosenborg BK, who acquired his services in July 2008 for a fee of 8 million Swedish kronor. He quickly established himself as a mainstay in the starting lineup, helping the Trondheim-based club claim consecutive Norwegian titles in 2009 and 2010. His performances garnered interest from various European clubs, including West Ham United, AC Milan, and Lecce.
Scottish Adventure with Celtic
On January 1, 2012, Lustig joined Scottish giants Celtic on a free transfer. He became an indispensable member of their defense, winning three Scottish Premiership titles (2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14) and the Scottish Cup in 2012/13.
International Career
Lustig represented Sweden at youth level from 2006 to 2009, amassing 21 appearances and scoring once. He made his senior debut in January 2008, featuring in a friendly against the United States. Over the years, he became a regular fixture in the national team and played a pivotal role in their qualifying campaign for Euro 2012. His maiden international goal came in a 2-1 victory over Moldova in March 2011.
