Biography of Mike Carr
Early Life and Career in GamingMike Carr is a renowned writer and game designer, best known for his work on the game 'Flight in the Skies', also known as 'Dawn Patrol'. He began his fascination with tabletop war games as a teenager. In 1976, he was invited by Gary Gygax to join the publishing company 'TSR, Inc' where he wrote the module 'In Search of the Unknown' for 'Dungeons & Dragons'. The module became hugely popular when it was included in the game's base set.
Contributions to 'Dungeons & Dragons'
With the release of the advanced version of 'Dungeons & Dragons', known as 'Advanced Dungeons & Dragons', Carr became the editor of three books: the 'Monster Manual', the 'Dungeon Masters Guide', and the 'Players Handbook'. He also wrote the prefaces for the early editions of these books.
Children's Books and Editing
In the early 1980s, Carr wrote several children's books published by TSR, including one from the 'Endless Quest' series titled 'Robbers & Robots'. He also served as an editor for several TSR publications such as the 'Monster Manual', 'Vault of the Drow', 'Players Handbook', 'White Plume Mountain', 'The Village of Hommlet', 'The World of Greyhawk', 'The Keep on the Borderlands', 'Descent into the Depths of the Earth', 'Against the Giants', and 'Deep Dwarven Delve'.
Continued Involvement in Gaming
As of 2007, Carr is the only person who has participated in the annual gaming festival 'Gen Con' for all forty editions. His game 'Fight in the Skies' has been played at every festival. Apart from his involvement in 'Dungeons & Dragons' until 1983 when he left TSR, Carr has been involved in other notable projects. He responded to a job advertisement in the 'Wall Street Journal' and was selected as an intern by legendary trader Richard Dennis to join the group of novice traders known as 'The Turtles'. After a few years, Carr became a successful trader and later founded his own investment firm in the 1990s.
Later Career
From 2000 to 2007, Carr worked as a marketing communications manager at 'General Power Systems, Inc.', a manufacturer of backup generators. Currently, Carr works as a marketing consultant and freelance journalist, often writing articles about snowmobiles. He writes travel articles about snowmobiling for various magazines and also has a column called 'Making Tracks' in the magazine 'Wisconsin Snowmobile News'. Additionally, he contributes to the publication of the aviation magazine 'Aerodrome' and writes a news column for fans of the game 'Dawn Patrol'. The news column has been running since 1969 and has produced over 150 issues, which is quite a significant number for such a publication.
