Mike Horn: Adventurer and Explorer
Early Life and EducationMike Horn was born in South Africa and later studied human settlement history at Stellenbosch University. In 1990, he embarked on a journey to Europe, where he initially worked as a ski instructor and expedition leader for river and canyon adventures.
Extreme Sports and World Records
In 1991, Horn took up paragliding and rafting. He joined the sports team "Sector No Limits" and soon after descended from Mont Blanc Glacier on a snowboard. In 1995, he founded the adventure sports center "No Limits" in Switzerland, where he broke the world record for the highest waterfall descent using a jetpack on Costa Rica's Pacuare River.
Amazonian Expedition
In 1997, Mike Horn embarked on his first major expedition, a six-month journey through the upper reaches of the Andes and the southern Amazon. He traveled 7,000 kilometers by jetpack before reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
Sailing Achievements
With his mentor, Laurent Bourgnon, Horn won the "Malticos" Grand Prix and was subsequently invited to crew on the "Mari Cha III," a 45-meter monohull. The vessel's next transatlantic race broke the previous record by two days and fourteen hours.
Equator Circumnavigation
In 1999, Horn initiated a new project: to circumnavigate the equator. For seventeen months, he traveled alone and without motorized assistance. Starting from the west coast of Africa, he crossed the ocean on an eight-meter trimaran. Upon reaching South America, he left his boat and proceeded on foot (occasionally using a pirogue) through the jungle. After crossing America, he reunited with his trimaran and sailed across the Pacific Ocean, Indonesia, and the Indian Ocean. He completed his journey by crossing Africa again, sometimes using a mountain bike and pirogue. Horn became the first person to accomplish this feat, gaining global recognition and numerous awards.
North Pole Solo Expedition
In 2002, Horn attempted a solo trip to the North Pole but was forced to abandon it after forty-five days due to severe frostbite on his fingers. A month after undergoing amputation of his fingertips, he embarked on a new record-breaking expedition: to circumnavigate the Arctic Circle alone, without motorized assistance or dogs. The expedition, named "Arktos," took two years and three months to complete.
