Early Life and Career at BBCMike Tucker, a renowned special effects specialist from South Wales, spent many years at the BBC television studios, honing his craft. His expertise in creating realistic effects for shows like "I Was a Rat," "999 International," "Raging Planet," and "Twister Week" earned him widespread recognition.
The Model Unit and BAFTA Win
In 2001, after the closure of the BBC's special effects department, Tucker established his own company, The Model Unit, based at Ealing Studios. Since then, he has created stunning effects for productions such as BBC's "Surviving Disaster" (episode: "Krakatoa - The Last Days"), ITV's "Moonshot" and "Primeval," and Discovery Channel's "Human Body: Pushing the Limits" and "Clash of the Dinosaurs."
In May 2006, Tucker's exceptional work on the drama-documentary "Hiroshima" earned him a prestigious BAFTA Award for Best Special Effects.
Emmy Award and Writing Career
Tucker's talents extended beyond special effects; he is also an accomplished writer. Together with Robert Perry, he penned the novel "Illegal Alien" (1997), which served as the foundation for the Doctor Who storyline in the 27th season of the iconic TV series. They collaborated on subsequent books including "Matrix" (1998), "Storm Harvest" (1999), and "Loving the Alien" (2003). Tucker also authored the solo novel "Prime Time" (2000).
University Lectures and Doctor Who Connection
In addition to his writing and special effects work, Tucker has contributed to audio projects and given lectures on science fiction at a university level. Notably, in 2003, he and Perry penned the "Companion Piece for Telos" novella, continuing the Doctor Who narrative. Their latest Doctor Who novel, their tenth, is titled "The Nightmare of Black Island."
