Biography of Mikhail Gendelev

Mikhail Gendelev was a poet and author of numerous poetry collections, and in the past, he was a sports doctor. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Ettinger and Tzaban prizes. Mikhail was one of Israel's most beloved authors.

Early Life

Mikhail Gendelev was born in Leningrad in 1950. He became a student at the Leningrad Medical Institute and, after successfully completing his studies, started working as a sports doctor. Mikhail began writing poetry at the age of seventeen. Although his works as a young poet were not published in official publications, his poetic pieces were well-received by his closest circle.

Move to Israel

When Mikhail Gendelev turned twenty-seven, he moved to Israel to settle down permanently. In 1979, he made Jerusalem his home and also took up the position of a sports doctor in one of the organizations. Gendelev's medical career thrived, and he even worked as a military doctor during the Lebanese war.

Literary Career

In the 1990s, Mikhail Gendelev became actively involved in writing and started gaining more recognition. His journalistic abilities were unquestionable, and in 1992, the talented Gendelev was appointed as the President of the Literary Club of Jerusalem. Over time, Mikhail's works became truly popular, especially after his poems started appearing in Russian-language publications in Israel and some European magazines. His poetry collections, particularly "Prazdnik" ("Holiday"), "Tsar" ("King"), "Izbrannoe" ("Selected Works"), "V sadakh Allakha" ("In the Gardens of Allah"), and "Stikhotvoreniya Mikhaila Gendeleva 1984" ("Poems of Mikhail Gendelev 1984"), were memorable to the readership. His works stood out as virtuosic, with a unique blend of realism and a remarkable poetic style. The recurring theme in Gendelev's poems was war, which became the focal point of his writings.

Passing

Mikhail Gendelev passed away in late March 2009, at the age of less than sixty. The exact cause of death for the talented poet is still unknown.
