Biography of Mira Nair

Mira Nair (43) is an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter. She was born in the city of Orissa in a military family. She received her education at an Irish Catholic school and a university in Delhi. After completing her studies, she became interested in acting and even tried her hand in theater. In 1976, she moved to the United States and studied sociology at Harvard University.

Early Career

Nair began her filmmaking career in the United States. Her debut film, "Salaam Bombay!" (1988), brought her international acclaim and an Oscar nomination. The film depicted the life and adventures of a young man living in the poorest neighborhoods of Bombay.

Award-Winning Film

Nair's film, "Monsoon Wedding," won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, making her the first woman in history to receive the top prize at the renowned event. This achievement also made her the first laureate from India. Notably, the film was shot in just one month using a handheld camera.

Personal Life

Mira Nair's husband is cinematographer Mitch Epstein, whom she met during her time at Harvard University.
