Missy Franklin Biography
Melissa Jeanette Franklin, known by her nickname Missy, was born on May 10, 1995, in Pasadena, California. Both of Missy's parents are originally from Canada. She began swimming at the age of five at the insistence of her mother. In 2013, Missy is set to graduate from Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado.
Early Career
Despite having dual citizenship, Missy's mother offered her the opportunity to compete for the Canadian national team, but Missy declined, citing her patriotism towards the United States. In 2010, Missy participated in six races at the national championships and earned her first career medal at the FINA 2010 World Championships in Dubai, where she finished second in the 200m backstroke event.
World Championships Success
At the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, Missy won three gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal. Just three days after the championships, Missy competed at the 2011 National Championships in Palo Alto, California, where she won the 100m backstroke and freestyle events. She also placed fourth in the 200m relay and twelfth in the 50m freestyle.
World Records and Olympic Success
In October 2011, Missy set her first world record in the 200m backstroke at the FINA World Cup, becoming the first woman to break a world record in an individual event since the ban on high-tech swimsuits in 2010. She set her second world record in December at the 'Duel in the Pool' event in the 4x100m relay. At just seventeen years old, Missy became the second youngest member of the American swimming team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She competed in four individual events and three relays, winning four gold medals and one bronze medal.
Personal Life
Missy stands at a height of 1.85m, which sets her apart from other swimmers. Her father, Dick, jokingly refers to her size 46 feet as "built-in flippers." Missy has been coached by Todd Schmitz of the Colorado Stars since the age of seven. She has named Natalie Coughlin as her favorite athlete.
