Brahim Ghali: A Sahrawi Leader in Exile

Brahim Ghali was born into a nomadic Bedouin family. He received his higher education in Rabat, Morocco.

Founding the Polisario Front

In 1973, Ghali co-founded the Polisario Front, a movement advocating for the independence of Western Sahara from Moroccan rule.

Leadership Roles

After the death of the Polisario Front's first Secretary-General in 1976, Ghali was elected as his successor. He also served as President of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which has been recognized by a number of countries.

Political Policies

Under Ghali's leadership, the Polisario Front abandoned its socialist orientation and adopted liberal-democratic values, including multi-party democracy and a market economy.

Guerrilla Warfare and Exile

Ghali leads the Polisario Front's guerrilla campaign against Moroccan forces. He lives in exile in Algeria and is considered a protégé of the Algerian government.

International Diplomacy

Morocco's Constitutional Changes
