Biography of Morgan Hamm
Morgan Hamm, an American gymnast and participant of the 2008 Olympics, was born on September 24, 1982, in Ashland. He grew up on a farm in Wakesha, where he was accustomed to hard work from a young age. Alongside his twin brother, professional athlete Paul Hamm, Morgan experienced a constant sense of competition. Despite being only 30 minutes older than his brother, Morgan always found himself trying to catch up to Paul's achievements and goals.
Early Life and Sports Background
From childhood, their parents instilled a fighting spirit and determination in the twins, hoping that they would become professional athletes due to their physical abilities. To nurture their athletic talents, their father specially equipped a sports area on their farm in Wakesha. They had a pommel horse made from an old maple tree, rings hung in the attic of their house, and ladders converted into parallel bars. The barn was fully equipped with a trampoline and a springboard.
Path to Gymnastics Success
In 1999, Paul Hamm became a member of the US national gymnastics team, while Morgan joined later. Gymnastics runs in the Hamm family, as their older sister Betsy holds the title of "NCAA" champion. Their father, Sandy, is a national diver.
Olympic Journey
In 2000, the Hamm brothers represented the US national team at the Olympic Games, becoming the only twin gymnasts at the competition. During the qualifying competitions for the Winter Cup Championship, Paul intentionally withdrew from the race to secure a spot for Morgan in the national team, showing his deep brotherly love.
Temporary Retirement and Comeback
After the Athens Olympics, Morgan Hamm decided to step away from competitive gymnastics. He took a break from the sport for 20 months, not setting foot on the mat or touching any apparatus. In 2007, he earned a college degree and received an invitation from the US Olympic Committee to participate in the Beijing Games. Morgan actively trained for a year and embraced the physical exhaustion that came with the sport, as it had become an integral part of his life.
Personal Life
In December 2007, Morgan Hamm proposed to his longtime girlfriend Megan Shmanski.
