Mosi Tatupu: American Football Legend
Mosi Tatupu was an American professional football player who made his mark as a running back in the National Football League (NFL). His 15-year career saw him don the uniforms of the New England Patriots and St. Louis Rams.

Early Life and Education
Born in Pago Pago, American Samoa, on April 26, 1955, Tatupu attended Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. An all-around athlete, he excelled in basketball, setting several state records. He also showcased his skills in baseball and football, endearing himself to his peers with his jovial personality.
Tatupu went on to the University of Southern California, participating in the 1978 Hula Bowl and finishing his collegiate career with 223 carries for 1,277 rushing yards (5.73 yards per carry). The Mosi Tatupu Award is presented annually in his honor to the Special Teams Player of the Year by the Maui Quarterback Club and Hula Bowl.
NFL Career
Drafted by the New England Patriots in the 8th round (215th overall) in 1978, Tatupu played primarily as a halfback and became a standout on special teams. He rushed for 2,415 yards on 612 carries with 18 touchdowns, leading the league with 5.5 yards per carrying in 1983.
Tatupu also caught 96 passes for 843 yards and 2 touchdowns, including scores against the Baltimore Colts in 1981 and Atlanta Falcons in 1983. His best receiving season came in 1984 when he hauled in 16 receptions for 159 yards.
In a 1987 game against the Oakland Raiders, Tatupu threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tony Collins.
Coaching and Legacy
After retiring as a player, Tatupu served as head football coach at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham, Massachusetts, with former New England Patriots center Pete Brock as his assistant. He most recently coached running backs at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts.
Mosi Tatupu passed away on February 23, 2010, at the age of 54 in Plainville, Massachusetts. His legacy lives on through his son, Lofa Tatupu, who played middle linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks.
