Prime Minister of Egypt
Moustafa Madbouly was appointed Prime Minister of Egypt on June 14, 2018, by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, succeeding Sherif Ismail. He concurrently serves as the Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Development.
Education and Early Career
Madbouly received his master's and doctoral degrees in engineering from Cairo University in 1988 and 1997, respectively. He held the positions of Chairman of the General Authority for Urban Planning and Executive Director of the Training and Urban Planning Institute from 2009 to 2011.
Government Service
From 2012 to 2014, Madbouly served as the Regional Director for Arab States at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. He was subsequently appointed Minister of Housing under Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab in March 2014.
The "Millions of Housing Units" Project
As Housing Minister, Madbouly oversaw the implementation of the ambitious "Millions of Housing Units" project, a national initiative aimed at providing affordable housing to Egyptians.
Interim Prime Minister
In November 2017, Madbouly was appointed interim Prime Minister following Sherif Ismail's departure for medical treatment in Germany.
Prime Ministership
On June 7, 2018, President Sisi officially named Madbouly as Prime Minister. He immediately reshuffled the cabinet, replacing several key ministers. Madbouly also made history by appointing a record number of women to ministerial positions, including eight.
Government Formation and Agenda
Madbouly selected 13-16 deputy ministers and presented his government's political statement on June 24, 2018. The government's priorities include economic development, social justice, and security.
Ongoing Challenges
Egypt faces numerous challenges, including unemployment, poverty, and a sluggish economy. Madbouly's government has pledged to address these issues and improve the lives of all Egyptians.
