Early Life and EducationMugur Isărescu was born in Drăgăşani, Romania. He graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest in 1971.
Career in Academia and International Relations
For 19 years, Isărescu worked at the Institute of International Economics. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later served at the Romanian embassy in the United States.
Governor of the National Bank of Romania
In September 1990, Isărescu became Governor of the National Bank of Romania, a position he has held with distinction since then. He briefly served as Prime Minister of Romania from December 1999 to November 2000.
Political Career
Isărescu's political career included a failed bid for President in 2000, where he placed fourth with 9% of the vote. He is credited with laying the foundation for Romania's economic reforms, which were later continued by Adrian Năstase and Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu.
Romania's Integration into the EU
During Isărescu's tenure as Governor, Romania began formal negotiations with the European Union on February 15, 2000.
