Nancy Kerry, an American astronaut, was born on December 29, 1958, in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. However, she considers Troy, Ohio, USA, where she spent her childhood, to be her hometown. In 1977, she graduated from high school in Troy and enrolled at Ohio State University. In 1980, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology. Alongside her studies at the university, she underwent military training and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1981. She served as a helicopter flight instructor at Fort Rucker Air Base, Alabama, USA, accumulating a total flight time of 3,500 hours on various helicopter models. In 1985, she obtained a Master's degree in Engineering Safety from the University of Southern California. Since 1987, she has been working at NASA, specializing in developing simulators for the reusable Space Shuttle system.
In January 1990, Nancy was selected to join the NASA Astronaut Group. In June 1991, she completed the Astronaut Candidate Training Program and became a qualified Flight Specialist. Her first space mission took place from June 21 to July 1, 1993, aboard the Space Shuttle "Endeavour" as a Flight Specialist for the STS-57 mission. The mission lasted for 9 days, 23 hours, and 45 minutes. Her second space flight occurred from July 13 to July 22, 1995, on board the Space Shuttle "Discovery" for the STS-70 mission. She served as a Flight Specialist, and the mission lasted for 8 days, 22 hours, and 20 minutes. Her third space journey took place from December 4 to December 16, 1998, aboard the Space Shuttle "Endeavour" for the STS-88 mission. During this mission, the assembly of the International Space Station began. The duration of the flight was 11 days, 19 hours, 18 minutes, and 47 seconds. In total, Nancy spent 30 days, 17 hours, 23 minutes, and 47 seconds in space over the course of her three missions. She was awarded three NASA "Space Flight" medals in 1993, 1995, and 1998.
