Teenage Indian Hero Saves Cousin from Leopard
In a remarkable act of bravery, a 14-year-old Indian boy, Naresh Kaluram Bhala, rescued his seven-year-old cousin, Harshad Vitthal Bhala, from the clutches of a leopard.
Unprovoked Attack
On June 14, Naresh and Harshad were exploring their grandmother's farm in Karpatwadi village, near Thane, when the incident occurred. They were away from adult supervision, searching for blackberries. A leopard lurking in the bushes suddenly lunged at Naresh, but the teenager swiftly dodged its attack. Unfortunately, the beast then pounced on Harshad, injuring him.
Courage under Pressure
Unfazed, Naresh grabbed a nearby stick and rocks and began striking the leopard, forcing it to loosen its hold on his cousin. The boys' grandmother, Kanhibai, heard their screams and rushed to their aid, wielding a sickle to scare off the wild cat, which eventually fled.
Rushed to Help
Harshad was taken to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, while Naresh escaped unscathed. Remarkably, the next day, a forestry team discovered the dead leopard about 300 meters from the attack site. The carcass was transported to Sanjay Gandhi National Park for an autopsy.
Cause of Death
Veterinarians Prashant Gadve and Shailesh Pethe from Parel Veterinary College determined that the leopard, estimated to be 10-12 years old, had died of old age.
Recognition for Bravery
Naresh and Harshad received commendations from the local police department for their courage. Police Station Superintendent Suhas Kharmate praised Naresh, saying, "For a boy so young, he displayed extraordinary bravery in rescuing his cousin."
Aftermath
The incident highlighted the dangers faced by rural communities living near wildlife sanctuaries. Authorities have since taken measures to prevent similar attacks by urging residents to avoid venturing into forest areas alone and by increasing patrols in the area.
