Prince Naseem Hamed, born on February 12, 1974, is a British former professional boxer. Known for his flamboyant style both inside and outside the ring, Hamed quickly gained fame and became one of the best boxers in the world.
Early Life and Career
Hamed began his boxing journey at the age of 7 when he started training at Brendan Ingle's boxing gym. By the age of 12, he already had a clear vision of his future, confidently telling Boxing News editor, Harry Mullan, "You should write a story about me, I'm going to be a world champion!"
Hamed's unique style of boxing, which resembled a performance for the spectators, became his trademark. With his music, dancing, leopard-print shorts, memorable ring entrances, and his signature twirling move, Hamed captivated the audience. He was often referred to as one of the best showmen in the world by celebrities such as Sir Bob Geldof, Will Smith, Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, and David Beckham.
Professional Success
In January 1996, Hamed won the IBF featherweight title by defeating Tom "Boom Boom" Johnson. This victory made him a two-belt champion, as he already held the WBO title. However, his reign as a dual champion was short-lived as he was stripped of the IBF belt in August of the same year due to boxing politics.
Despite the setback, Hamed's popularity continued to soar. In the same year, he signed a lucrative contract with HBO, making him one of the highest-paid boxers in the world. His first fight in America took place on December 19, 1997, at the renowned Madison Square Garden, where he defeated Kevin Kelley in a four-round thriller. After intense training in the Pocono Mountains alongside heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, Hamed emerged victorious, becoming the unified champion of both the WBO and WBC organizations. Unfortunately, due to boxing politics, he was forced to relinquish the WBC title in January 2000.
